Mad Men Formal, German Style (Part III)

Posted on June 10, 2012

In the third of three posts on Jet Age German formal styling, we look at an example of formal day wear.

The morning suit (also called a “Stresemann”) is executed in different variations: double-breasted or single-breasted, closing with two or three buttons. Its characteristic feature is the combination with striped trousers of dark or light grey. It looks sophisticated with a light waistcoat and a dark velvet collar. Indispensable for a gentleman to wear with this suit is a black overcoat which nowadays can be worn single-breasted and fully buttoned.

Formal Facts: the German word for overcoat is paletot (pronounced PAL-i-toh), a French term also used by the British.
