The 2013 awards season began with a bang last night, sartorially speaking. The conservative styling of the 2012 season returned in force as did shawl collars, bow ties, shirts with turndown collars and fly fronts, square-fold pocket squares and, sadly, exposed shirt navels due to absent waist coverings.  There were some new variations though. Midnight blue surged in popularity as did slim-fit cuts which were often so extreme that trouser legs bunched up over the shoes. (Both trends no doubt received a boost from the Tom Ford tuxedo featured in the latest James Bond film.)

Dustin Hoffman looked very much at home in his classic one-button peaked lapel.  He could have shown a bit of shirt cuff but then again so could just about everyone else.  (Kevork Djansezian/NBC via Getty Images)

Ben Affleck was possibly the only other celebrity to wear a waist covering – only to negate its benefits by wearing his trousers down at his hips. (Jason Merritt/Getty Images)

Finally, I should note that there were plenty of perfectly respectable outfits which I had to omit simply for space considerations. The fact that Jon Hamm, Tyler Burrell, Bryan Cranston, Daniel Day Lewis, Tate Donovan, Diego Klattenhoff and Sam Fox did not qualify as first-place finishers is less a criticism of their choices and more a  testament to how high the bar has been raised as of late.
